CommonTown has launched an AI-powered Writing Tutor designed to help students strengthen their English writing and storytelling skills while supporting educators in delivering more personalised learning.

Writing requires idea generation, organisation, and reflection, yet limited classroom time often makes one-to-one guidance difficult. Educational researcher Benjamin Bloom famously found that students receiving individual tutoring could achieve learning gains of up to two standard deviations (the “2-sigma improvement”) compared to conventional classroom instruction. CommonTown’s Writing Tutor was developed to help approximate these benefits at scale.

The tool guides learners through structured, step-by-step prompts that scaffold thinking and help students start writing with confidence. Rather than generating full answers, it acts as a digital coach that encourages reflection and independent expression.

Built on a secure and scalable cloud architecture using services from Amazon Web Services, the Writing Tutor and its classroom deployment were recently featured in a case study on the AWS website. Classroom trials reported improved idea generation and greater ease in starting writing tasks.

CommonTown plans to expand the Writing Tutor to support more languages, additional writing genres, and deeper integration with school learning systems. It is available in our CommonAcademy and Readin products.
